League Rules

MCTA UTR Sports Junior Team Tennis League - 2026 Co-Ed Competitive League Rules. These rules apply to all matches and participants.

Sportsmanship & Zero Tolerance Policy

  • Although competition is spirited, all participants must exhibit good sportsmanship at all times
  • MCTA has a zero-tolerance policy regarding any physical or verbal altercations at or in connection with any match
  • All participants, parents, coaches, and captains must know and follow The Rules of Tennis and The Code: The Players' Guide for Unofficiated Matches

Match Structure & Format

  • Three courts played simultaneously: 2 singles courts and 1 doubles court (any mix of gender allowed)
  • Scoring format: NO-AD scoring, regular scoring, best 2 out of 3 sets; if teams split sets, a 10-point tiebreak is played in the 3rd set
  • Players required: Each team must have a minimum of 4 players of any gender
  • Warm-up: 5-minute maximum warm-up is allowed
  • Match length: 90 minutes per court including warm-up

Lateness Penalties

Players must be on court and ready to play at the official match start time.

  • 0:01-5:00 minutes late: Loss of toss + 1 game
  • 5:01-10:00 minutes late: Loss of toss + 2 games
  • 10:01-15:00 minutes late: Loss of toss + 3 games
  • 15:01 minutes late or more: DEFAULT (match is forfeited)

Coaching & Court Conduct

  • Coaching: Allowed only during the 90-second changeover by the team coach, captain, co-captain, or designated captain
  • Parents: Allowed to assist during 10U matches only
  • Only team captains are permitted to sit courtside
  • All players must abide by The Code and rules of tennis throughout the match

Substitute Players & Roster Management

  • Subs are allowed for all junior leagues if your rostered players are unavailable
  • Registration requirement: All substitutes must be registered before their scheduled match or will be considered a default
  • Sub fee: Players not registered for the season must pay the $45 fee before playing any matches
  • Players may be added throughout the season up to the start time of a team's next-to-last local league match

Match Defaults & Forfeits

  • If a team cannot field enough players, the doubles line must be defaulted and both singles matches will occur simultaneously
  • The third scheduled doubles match will be played as an exhibition match in Canadian doubles format with the available player(s)
  • Unless both captains agree in writing, the team seeking to claim a forfeit must have its players present on court

Score Reporting & League Standings

  • 48-hour deadline: Winning teams must post scores in UTR Sports within 48 hours of match completion
  • Dispute deadline: Any disputes must be made within 24 hours; no changes allowed after the dispute deadline

Captains Instructions

Essential guidance for managing JTT matches. Updated Winter 2025.

Pre-Match Preparation

  • 1. Print the roster sheet: Have the team roster ready to present to the other captain before leaving for the venue
  • 2. Arrive early: If the match starts at 4 p.m., arrive no later than 3:45 p.m.
  • 3. Check in at front desk: Determine which three courts you are playing on and obtain 3 NEW CANS OF BALLS (one for each court). Either captain can get the balls.
  • 4. Check in players: Make sure everyone is present 5 minutes before the start time. Contact the team captain if a player is running late and inform the other team captain of the delay and ETA if available.
  • 5. Connect with other captain: Find the other team's captain and exchange lineups 5 MINUTES BEFORE the match start time

Match Start & Pre-Match Meeting

Important: No pre-official warmups are allowed before your designated match time. Do NOT use open courts for warmups before the designated match time.

Once the match begins, hold a quick meeting on court (2-3 minutes maximum) and cover:

  • a. Match format: Best of 2 tie-break sets to 6 games (tiebreak to 7 points, win by 2). No-Ad scoring. If split sets, play a 10-point tiebreaker to determine the winner.
  • b. Scorekeeper: Use the scorekeeper at the net (if available) to show set scores. Identify HOME and AWAY teams.
  • c. Score calling: The server is responsible for calling out the score before EVERY POINT to avoid scoring issues
  • d. Warm-up time: Players have ONLY 5 minutes to warm up. Remind them to begin serving at the 2-minute mark.
  • e. Court assignments: Tell players their lineups and which court to go to for warmups

During Match Play

  • No parents on court: Once play begins, NO PARENTS should be on any court. Exception: Adjacent courts that are open and unused (parents may sit only as close as half a court width to watch).
  • Captain movement: As captain, you are allowed on ANY COURT. Rotate between courts to observe and ensure smooth play.
  • Scoring disputes: If scoring issues arise, players must go back to the point both teams agree on. REMIND SERVERS TO CALL OUT THE SCORE BEFORE EACH POINT.
  • Line call disputes: Players may request a captain to watch lines. If your child is playing, the other captain should watch lines to avoid bias.
  • Match duration: Players should have 75-80 minutes for matches

Score Reporting & Match Timing

  • Final scores: As matches finish, get final scores, write them down, and share with the other captain. The HOME team usually fills out the official score sheet, but take a photo if the other captain has it.
  • Email scores: Email the scores to your team captain/coordinator or email a picture of the score sheet to adavis@mctatennis.org
  • Matches timing out: Matches are timed for 90 minutes. Once the official clock reaches the end time, play is over. Report the score as-is (incomplete and timed-out).

Match Timeout Rules

When a match times out, use these rules to determine the winner:

  • If the first or second set tiebreak is in progress, the team ahead by one point or more wins the tiebreak, and the team with the most sets won is the match winner
  • If tied in either set tiebreak, the tiebreak will not count, and the total number of games won determines the match winner
  • If the third set tiebreak has not started and total games are equal, the match is considered a tie and will be entered in UTR as a tie

Coaching & Emergency Contact

  • Coaching: The team's designated captain may coach. You can only coach during changeovers on any court during the match.
  • Emergency situations: If there are any emergency situations on the court (fights, yelling, unresolvable issues), please contact/report to MCTA JTT staff immediately at adavis@mctatennis.org
